Make a place like Knights in JC, have beer on tap (diff kinds of beer that is, not just the big 3) and have specials (Tues and Thurs after ten all beers 2 bucks; yes that includes guniess, newcastle and all sorts of craft beers) sell pizza by the slice and other pub food. Make it big enough to have a open mic night for acoustic music through the week to draw in crowds. Have specials for college students (alcohol and food) then sit back and get fat off of 50 yrs of idiots not taking advantage of a cash cow.
Nothing but the process is infinite
Eternal, endless, indefinite
I don't know about that. Go to any college town in the world and most of the bars nearby are sports bars. I don't know why but the area around UVa-Wise is totally underutilized as a place to make money...put any kind of service industry business around there and I guarantee you it would succeed if it were run well. There's no place even close to walking distance from the college. When I was a college student, we almost always went out to eat and drink somewhere that we could walk to...nobody has to DD and no DUIs. College kids may not all have tons of money to throw around...but they always seem to have enough to buy food and drinks.

You are trying to compare a school with an enrollment of 1800 at least half being underage to schools with an enrollment of 15,000. You also have to consider that a place like Knights isn't just drawing from ETSU but also Milligan (1100), Tusculum (2600), and Northeast State (6600). Then they are also drawing from a general population of 60,000+ just in town, also from Piney Flats, Jonesborough, Elizabethton. Someone mentioned within walking distance from the college which puts you in downtown Wise or at the old Poor Farm at best. As I said before this place just serving all these different types of beers and appetizers like you suggested would have to be packed nearly every night not just Friday/Saturday. Then you have to look at the students you are relying on won't even be around 2-3 months out of the year.

If properly run any business can be successful, just depends on what your expectations are.

An establishment just like this tanked hard and fast in Blacksburg recently, not sure they even lasted a year. It was in a new shopping area of town (on the Blacksburg Transit line), custom built, believe there were 10 beers on tap, entertainment, food, etc. It was the only place like this in town, and 27,000 students couldn't keep this place open.
No guarantees for any place, anywhere.
You'll shoot your eye out.

A mentioned by someone else, it's not the chew toys and collars that we're after. We have repeat business buying high-end foods and supplies. Our pets have to eat every day, and my dogs dont eat from a $20, 40 pound bag of Ol' Roy. We do it because we know what we feed our pets and give as treats has an impact on what we have to spend on veterinary care in the long term. The food we pick even has everything to do with how they smell, their activity levels, etc.
If I can go to Bristol on a regular basis for raw bones and food (using almost a tank of gas), I'd gladly go to downtown anywhere in Wise County or any closer county.
You'll shoot your eye out.
